So, last time I wrote I was getting ready for a PSG on Seb last Thursday. Well I can truthfully say that we didn't have a very good day. It was just one of those times where I couldn't get him in front of my leg and connected in the warm-up, so in the test he fell even further behind my leg and dropped me. I should have expected it really, if I can't get it in the warm-up, I should expect nothing in the test.
It was quite a big competition field too, as everyone is trying to get out and do their test-runs for Addington High Profile. So not the best place to get a less than decent score, but right now, things are definitely looking up! I have been without a trainer for six months and as the competition season is approaching fast (and after Thursday's performance bringing on the reality that a reliable, good trainer is a vital part of success) I really needed to come to a decision of what to do about the situation. I have been looking high and low for trainers, but it isn't as simple as just picking one out of a hat, packing up everything and moving to them.
However, after the squad training session last weekend with Sandy Phillips, I was immediately attracted to her style and approach to training. I have since had just three lessons with her, and the difference in Seb is unbelievable.
Her yard - Aston Farm - is just beautiful. Seb had a little sleepover on the weekend and his stable was actually bigger than my own bedroom! So with amazing training and perfect facilities, we have decided to move the boys over there next week. Sue and Gary at Cheltenham Dressage have been absolutely amazing in their support and care for the horses, and they were a perfect place to keep the horses over the winter for some cross-training, hacking, and all-weather turn-out. However I really find it important to be based with your trainer, and with the competition season coming up, the time is now to move.
I think my past 6 months can be summed up in the saying - "Things have to go wrong before they can get better". I have felt like I've been in a rut and trying to climb out... there is no ladder to get me out, I have to build the strength to climb myself out.

This sounds like a really good opportunity for you guys!!
It's a good thing that you found a new trainer. As you know, I pretty much do my own training, and nothing is as valuable as having someone else who knows more than you do to help you out (even if it hurts my pride). I hope you grow lots in your time with Sandy and good luck with the Addington High Profile =]
Yes I am so excited :) It is good to be able to train your own horses and know what you are doing, but there comes a time when someone just has to get on and I guess give you a reality check on the progress. You know what they say - behind every good rider, there is an even better trainer :)
Great to hear you've found a new trainer. Have you considered training with Carl Hester. I know he is definately who I would base with if I were in UK!
Carl is definitely a top choice for every dressage rider, but unfortunately his waiting list is pretty much endless! However there are some other fabulous trainers who have "been there and done it" just like Carl, but just not under the limelight presently.
It's good to keep in mind that different methods suit different people too, and Sandy's methods come straight from the incredible Georg Theodorescu so are in every way highly effective :)
